Increase Perennials by Division

Now is a good time to divide perennials as they go dormant for winter. Almost all, except those sensitive to cold weather, can be dug, separated and replanted. They can be divided in the ground or after lifting the entire clump. A sharpshooter shovel works better than round-pointed shovels. Cut back tops to avoid tangling the shovel blade in the foliage. After removing the clump, use a heavy kitchen knife to divide the root mass.
