Traditional workboats
The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort has published a revised new edition of “Traditional Work Boats of North Carolina.” The booklet’s purpose, says the author Michael B. Alford, is to “provide a general survey of the major types of small craft that have developed in North Carolina, together with sufficient commentary to make the reader more aware of the significance of boats in our society.” Alford, former curator of maritime research, points out that the compilation is not particularly technical, which increases its interest to the layman as well as the researcher. The publication is available at the Maritime Museum Store for $7.95, not including shipping and handling. Call (252) 728-7317 or e-mail maritime@ncmail.net to order your copy.

“Bloodlines of Shackleford Banks”
For centuries, wild horses have roamed the beaches and maritime forests of coastal North Carolina. Their origin has long been a mystery. In “Bloodlines of Shackleford Banks,” fictitious Roberta “Bert” Lenehan is lending a hand to rounding up the island’s horses. It sounds like a plum assignment, until it appears that an equine infectious anemia may be present and veterinary records were altered to hide it. Then another volunteer turns up dead, and Bert’s deepening relationship with a park ranger complicates matters. Who is the person with the greatest stake in the herd being certified disease-free? As Bert unravels the mystery, she discovers legends that explain the origin of the Shackleford herd. Working with the ponies in real-life inspired author BJ Mountford to write this follow-up novel to her debut novel “Sea-born Women.” Mountford lives on the North Carolina coast. John F. Blair, Publisher of Winston-Salem. Hardback, $22.95.
