The Potter's Eye

The University of North Carolina Press has published a book and catalog, “The Potter’s Eye,” that accompanies the exhibition. Mark Hewitt and Nancy Sweezy, both working potters in North Carolina, compiled the book. Hewitt’s section looks at the seeds of North Carolina pottery tradition in early Asian and European pottery and shows their growth into the North Carolina work of the 19th century. Sweezy presents profiles of six contemporary North Carolina potters who are featured in the exhibition.
The book is 296 pages with 235 color illustrations and costs $39.95 in hardcover.

This humorous collection by NPR radio commentator Nan Graham serves up an anecdotal tour of the South and the characters who inhabit it. Graham’s essays range from the Florida Panhandle to the Research Triangle and include a fellow who eats Vicks VapoRub for dessert, a mom who refuses to acknowledge time zones and a more somber recollection of when Graham’s husband was fighting in Vietnam. Author Graham lives in Wilmington. “In a Magnolia Minute: Secrets of a Late Bloomer” is published by John F. Publisher of Winston Salem.

Located in Wake County, Wendell was chartered in 1903 but as this book reveals, the town’s roots go back to the early 19th century. Native resident and author George S. Pleasants explores the chronological overview of his hometown and the growth of business, transportation, education, finance and government. Pages also introduce many of Wendell’s outstanding citizens, past and present. The book offers more than 250 photographs and includes an appendix that features interesting historical tidbits as well as listings of past mayors, police chiefs and other key folks. Published by The Donning Company Publishers in Virginia Beach. Hardcover, 144 pages, $43 including shipping and handling. “The Brevard Rosenwald School: Black Education and Community Building in a Southern Appalachian Town, 1920–1966” tells the history of the Brevard school and the Rosenwald project’s attempts to improve the education of African Americans in the South. Betty J. Reed also focuses on the school’s beginnings, development, significance to the community, its closing, the integration process and the Rosenwald community today. The book presents narratives from former students about their educational goals, pursuits and accomplishments both at the school and later in their lives.
