Señora Dixie Salsa

Owner Dixie Wilson of Wake Forest writes that she makes her salsa the way her mother used to — with all natural ingredients, love, dedication and absolutely no preservatives. This fresh-tasting salsa is locally made and comes in hot, medium and mild versions. All are low-calorie, low sodium and gluten-free. Señora Dixie Salsa goes great with chips, or ladled over scrambled eggs or rice. It also serves as a marinade for various meats. Price per jar, including tax, is $5.99 at the North Hills Farmers market in Raleigh and other events and $6.50 online. Retail price is between $5.95 to $6.95 per jar at select stores.

Yah’s Best specializes in salsas made with the freshest ingredients. The Huntersville-based company offers six traditional salsas ranging from mild to hot, with a variety of specialty salsas including fruits, southwestern, and verde, along with its popular Carolina Caviar (a twist on “Poor Man’s Caviar”). Most are offered in pint (16-ounce) and quart (32-ounce) sizes and range in price from $5 to $10. Yah’s Best also offers canned items, including vegetable soup, apple and pumpkin butters and chow chows. In addition, it sells a large selection of fruit jams, pickled items and its house seasoning called Herbal Delight, a dried herb blend for meats and seafood, veggies, eggs and bread. Yah’s Best products are found at both the Charlotte and Raleigh Farmer’s Markets and a growing number of retail locations. Specialty trout products

Founded in 1948, Sunburst Trout Company has been family-owned and operated for three generations. The operation, based in Canton and served by Haywood EMC, sells a variety of specialty trout products. The company’s water source comes from the federally protected Shining Rock Wilderness Area, and Sunburst says its trout contain no mercury, PCB’s or pesticides. Products include premium cut fillets hot-smoked from hickory and grapevine clippings, trout chowder, trout cakes, smoked trout dip and exotic rainbow trout caviar. Gift boxes include the Lake Logan sampler with one smoked trout dip, a 2-ounce jar of caviar, one whole smoked trout and one portion-cut smoked trout. (When caviar is out of season, one cold smoked side and one tray of trout sausage is substituted.) It sells for $79.99. The company sells online and also in stores such as Whole Foods and Fresh Market.
