Video benefits Bodie Island lighthouse

Before the age of electricity, America’s lighthouses were manned by lighthouse keepers and their families. A new video, “Growing Up At The Lighthouse,” pays homage to the tradition and highlights the last two families to live at the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Now in their seventies, the children of lighthouse keepers Vernon Gaskill and Julian Austin share their stories. John Gaskill recalls the dangerous job of painting the tower, while Julian Austin Jr. remembers shooting off big goose guns. Told in the old Outer Banks brogue, their tales recall an isolated, magical life. Videographer Bob Boyer includes a climb to the top, revealing panoramic views from the sound to the sea. Proceeds from video sales are slated to go toward restoration of the Bodie Island Lighthouse. 45-minute video. Copies may be purchased at the Bodie Island Lighthouse Visitors Center, call (252) 473-3024 or send $29.50 (covers shipping, handling and tax) to Coastal Production Company, P.O. Box 431 Wanchese, NC 27981. To find out more about the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society,
