Located in the Sandhills region of North Carolina, Rockingham Speedway opened in 1965. The legendary Curtis Turner made his return to NASCAR with a victory in the track's inaugural event, while local favorite Benny Parsons clinched the 1973 championship here. A 1994 victory at Rockingham clinched that year's NASCAR championship for Dale Earnhardt. It was his seventh title, tying Earnhardt with Richard Petty for most of the sport's history. Topics include "The Great Eighties" and "Transition." The facility formerly known as North Carolina Motor Speedway and nicknamed "The Rock" experienced a rebirth under the direction of new owner Andy Hillenburg that co-authors Rick Houston and Bryan Hallman cover as well.
