Selling tomatoes to out-of-towners
If we had an overabundance of tomatoes, Mama would let us sell them in the front yard. Most of our customers were out of town people visiting Lake Norman.
One day, a very distinguished looking gentleman stopped by. As he began to pick up some tomatoes, I asked him, “Do you want a poke?” The man looked insulted and said, “Young lady, what do you mean?” I thought maybe he didn’t hear me, so I said louder, “I said do you want a poke?”
My cousin Carol who was visiting us said to him, “She means a paper bag.”
My sister Judy was so embarrassed she didn’t know what to say. I guess the poor man thought I was going to punch him in the face.
Another time, my cousin Mike was visiting. A man stopped by and wanted to buy a bushel of tomatoes. He said he forgot his money but would come back later and pay us. We kept waiting but the man never came back. Daddy wasn’t upset with us. He said that was a good way to learn that you can’t trust everyone.
