Turnips for Harris Teeter

When I was 8 years old in September 1967, we had a hard frost. It was very cold. We were pulling turnips, and my hands were frozen. We cut the tops off the turnips after we had pulled them out of the ground. Then we had to wash the things in cold water. We dipped turnips that were red with dirt in a #10 wash tub. They had to be cleaned when they were put in to bushel baskets so they could be taken to the local Harris Teeter store.

Grandpa must have had the best produce in town because we were the only local ones in the county who sold to Harris Teeter. We had corn, peas, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, strawberries, okra, you name it.

I guess it was not so bad after all. It’s 2007 and Harris Teeter is still around.
