Turtle boy As the only fourth grade teacher in a small school, I had the pleasure of teaching both my sons. The Ninja Turtles were popular the first time around when my youngest son, Chris, was in fourth grade. I discovered that he and some of his pals had concocted a “potion” that they rubbed on their backs each day to try to grow a shell. They didn’t realize that I knew about their potion. My son happened to get a sore throat about this same time. After seeing the doctor, I left my son with the sitter a couple of extra days, and I returned to teaching. The students all asked where he was. I told them it was just the craziest thing, but he was developing this hard crusty “skin” on his back and the doctors couldn’t figure out what it was.
