Returning to Stokes County

Having grown up in the rural Piedmont, in the same house during the 40s and 50s, I longed to move and experience other places and people. It happened after my marriage in 1964. Following a 2 1/2-year stint with the Army, my husband worked for an engineering company. During the years we moved to seven different states. We made many interesting friends in these locales, and we accepted a wide variety of ethnic norms.

In these diverse environments, I dreamed frequently of returning to the country life of my childhood. This, too, came to pass in 2002 when my husband and I purchased 15 acres in Stokes County to build our dream home.

Entertainment and porch areas were a must. The living area is one large kitchen with space to seat 27 comfortably for our first Thanksgiving feast back home. During mild weather our guests may flow to the deep porch surrounding the house. We have had about 275 first-time visitors sign our guest book.
I have always questioned what I have done to deserve this heaven on earth, but perhaps it’s holding on to my dream of returning home.
