The early 4-H garden

This year was very dry, so it was a little challenging to grow a garden, but these bean plants did very well in my 4-H garden. Within a few days planting the seeds, I was pleased to see that they had started to sprout. It was fun to watch as the young plants started to grow. It was amazing seeing how strong the little bean seeds were, cracking the hard surface of the rich garden soil.

The older plants stood straight and tall holding their cotyledons triumphantly high in the air, while the younger ones stood with their backs bent, hard at work, pushing and heaving small clods of dirt so they, too, could stand straight and tall.

This was one of the many kinds of vegetables that I grew in my 4-H garden this year. I recommend 4-H to youth across the state. There are endless opportunities to participate in from growing a garden, to giving talks, and being able to meet other kids.
