Saving Mary
My mother, Mrs. Mary M. Brown, always told with such pride and eloquence of the time she fell into the Cape Fear River. She was only 7 at the time, but she could recall the event most vividly. She and my grandmother were traveling in a car driven by a family friend. They were going to cross over the river on the ferry. It was raining and the road was slippery. When the driver tried to steer the car onto the ferry, the car slid and fell into the river. My grandmother was a passenger in the front seat, and when she realized the car was sliding into the water, she was about to jump out of the car but looked back and saw little Mary in the back seat. Her only choice was to go down with the car. My grandmother obviously saved my mother and made it back to the surface for air.
