Swiss Chocolate Cake

An easy recipe that looks anything but basic. Fluffy, creamy and chocolatey — bring this beauty to your next holiday gathering.

Ingredients

  • 1 box Swiss chocolate cake mix*
  • 1 small box instant vanilla pudding
  • 3 eggs
  • 1½ cups milk
  • ¾ cup oil
  • Baking spray with flour
Frosting
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 (12-ounce) container Cool Whip
  • 2 large Hershey bars, grated
  • 1 cup pecans, finely chopped

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

  2. Spray three 9-inch round cake pans with baking spray with flour. Mix ingredients together well and pour into cake pans. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

  3. For frosting: Mix cream cheese and sugar together. Add Cool Whip to this mixture and then the Hershey bars and pecans. Spread over and between layers of cooled cake.

*If you can't find Swiss Cake Mix, any chocolate boxed cake mix will do. We used devil's food with nice results.

    • Sorry to hear that you had some trouble. We did another test — for us, 300 degrees for 25 minutes worked out well.

    • Hi Barbara - I have this recipe from a cookbook and it's baked at 325 for 20 to 25 minutes. Hope all works out well for you.

    • We did another test today to see if you can use any boxed chocolate cake mix. We tried devil's food cake, which worked out great, but I think any boxed chocolate cake would work! Happy baking!

  • I’ve never baked a round cake before. I’m confused as to why I would need 3 cake pans. Can someone explain that process for me? I want to make this cake for the super bowl!

    • It’s a three layer round cake. After cake it done and cooled, you place first cake on plate ice top, the. Place second cake on top of iced cake and ice top of it, then place third cake on top of iced second cake and then ice top and sides of all layers

  • Look for Duncan Hines cake when looking for Swiss Chocolate. I've had good luck finding it at Food Lion. German Chocolate used to be my favorite but this has taken it's place,

  • I used German chocolate cake mix with pudding in the mix and it turned out perfectly. I would advise not to add a box of pudding mix if it’s already in the mix..

    • I also baked this cake using a mix which had pudding in it to which I added a box of pudding. Did not hurt the cake at all.
