A Good Read: Surf Dog’s Safety Tips

For many North Carolina families, springtime means a beach trip may be just around the corner. The highly experienced Surf Dog is here to make sure those trips are both fun and safe. Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative members wrote and illustrated this colorful book — author Kevin McCabe is a surfer with more than 50 years’ experience, and his wife, Kim Mosher, is a nationally known color pencil artist.

• If you get in a rip current DO NOT PANIC … RELAX and stay afloat!
• SWIM PARALLEL to the beach until you can swim back toward the shore.
• The current will pull you out but not under the water.
• CALMLY wave your hands and shout if you need help but DO NOT panic.
