The black and white candy cane stripes make the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse one of the most recognizable in the country, as well as a beloved North Carolina landmark. It is the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, reaching nearly 200 feet.

It is the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, reaching nearly 200 feet. It’s a “must-visit” while on the Outer Banks. For intrepid souls, lighthouse climbs are available. Plan on navigating narrow stairs with 257 steps, the equivalent of a 12-story building, with two-way traffic and a handrail on only one side.

The sparking blue waters make for a pristine backdrop for this beautiful lighthouse. The view from the top overlooking the surrounding islands is just as stunning.
