Anson County Early College student, Madelynn Thomas, was chosen as this year's Electric Cooperative Youth Tour delegate after completing the application process and making a great impression during the interview.

Alongside approximately 1,800 high school students, Madelynn Thomas of Anson County Early College participated in a weeklong tour of the nation's capital sponsored by Pee Dee Electric from June 15–21, 2024.

During the tour, she and her fellow delegates learned about the Cooperative Business Model and United States history, visiting iconic landmarks such as the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and various Smithsonian museums. They also paid their respects at Arlington National Cemetery, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and the Korean War Veterans Memorial. Delegates met with members of North Carolina's congressional delegation during a meeting on Capitol Hill, where they had the opportunity to ask policy questions and receive valuable advice.

“It was an unforgettable trip, and I would recommend it to any rising juniors or seniors!”

“This trip was absolutely incredible! My favorite parts were cruising the Potomac River, visiting the Washington National Cathedral, and touring the U.S. Capitol. Exploring the monuments and museums was fun, too. The changing of the guard at the Arlington Memorial is something everyone should see. I enjoyed meeting and connecting with other students across the country,” stated Youth Tour Delegate Madelynn Thomas. “It was an unforgettable trip, and I would recommend it to any rising juniors or seniors!”

As part of Pee Dee Electric’s commitment to community and powering a brighter future one member at a time, the cooperative sponsors up to two students each year to represent Pee Dee Electric on the Rural Electric Youth Tour. Rising high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity beginning in November each year.
