At Union Power, our commitment to supporting the communities we serve goes beyond delivering reliable electricity. We are proud to have obtained a grant from the USDA Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant (REDLG) progam allowing us to provide no-cost financing to Ridgecrest Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) in Stanly County for critical upgrades to their facilities.
This is the second REDLG grant we have secured to benefit Ridgecrest VFD. The first, in 2018, provided funding for a new pumper tanker truck, enhancing their ability to respond to emergencies. Now, with this latest grant, Ridgecrest VFD has been able to renovate their fire station to accommodate a paid night shift, ensuring faster response times and improved emergency services for local residents.
The funding also enabled them to replace the the entire roof of the fire station, improving the building’s durability and safety for years to come. The need for these upgrades comes as western Stanly County continues to experience steady growth. With more families and businesses moving into the area, demand for emergency services has increased, making it essential for Ridgecrest VFD to expand its capabilities to meet the community’s evolving needs.
Carrie Stroud, vice president of communications and marketing, stated, “Volunteer fire departments are vital to rural communities, and we are honored to play a role in helping Ridgecrest VFD expand its capabilities. Through programs like REDLG, we continue to invest in the communities we serve and call home.”

“Small change that changes lives” is the foundation on which the Operation Round Up® program was built. Members who agree to participate allow Union Power Cooperative to “round up” their monthly electric bill to the next highest dollar.
