The way plants turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and sugar is called photosynthesis. A chemical called chlorophyll gives leaves their green color and helps make photosynthesis happen. In the fall, the summer-loving dominant chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, and reds (anthoscyanins) and yellows and oranges (carotenoids) emerge. Awesome
