Gramma’s Tomato Soup

As the days cool off, soup provides solace, especially one that Gramma used to make! Serve this tangy liquid comfort alongside crusty buttered bread, grilled cheese or over egg noodles. With ham infusing the soup, you may not need extra salt.

Ingredients

  • 1 ham bone or ⅛ smoked ham cut into bite-sized pieces

  • 2 tablespoons vinegar

  • 2 tablespoons dill seed or 2 pieces fresh dill

  • 10 prunes or ½ cup raisins (optional)

  • ½ cup onions, chopped

  • 1 can (46-ounce) tomato juice

  • 1 pint sour cream

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Shredded parmesan (optional)

  • Fresh dill, chopped (optional)

Directions

  1. Combine ham through tomato juice in a pot and simmer for a couple of hours until thickened to your liking.

  2. After soup has cooled for a bit, remove ham bone (if used), stir in sour cream and add salt and pepper to taste.

  3. Sprinkle with parmesan and fresh dill.

  • This sounds yummy. Prunes and raisins are so underutilized and I bet that gives this sound a nice subtle sweetness. Can't wait to try this.
