Join us on Saturday, October 4th at the James K. Polk State Site for a historic, open-hearth cooking demonstration. It is fall in the Carolinas as well as harvest time. Two of the crops grown were apples and pumpkins. Both played important roles in the family’s diet during Polk’s childhood. We will make a simple recipe of apple fritters and apple pupton. As for pumpkins, we are going to make pumpkin pie with a twist. Also, we will try our hand at a baked stuffed pumpkin. There should be lots of wonderful smells coming from the kitchen in October!
