Energy Use Advisor Todd Moore
- Take time to clean and reverse ceiling fans. Have them blow down to feel cooler.
- Change filters to help your unit run more efficiently.
- Have your HVAC equipment checked and cleaned by a professional.
- Close blinds and curtains to minimize the effect of the sun heating your home.
For maximum energy efficiency, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends thermostats set to 78 degrees in the summer. Keep in mind turning the thermostat down lower does not make the unit cool any faster. The greater the difference between inside and outside temperatures, the more the air conditioner will run to maintain that thermostat set point.
