“In 2019, the five members of our small bike club were on a ride, joking around that we should create an event that would include all three islands, because they’re so beautiful, and would make a great backdrop for a fundraiser.
Someone suggested that the money could go to the Boys & Girls Homes of North Carolina, in Lake Waccamaw. Realistically there was no way the five of us could pull something like this off ourselves; however, my Rotary club was a supporter of the Boys & Girls Homes—and our Rotarians are notorious for bringing manpower to an event. I approached club president David Vanasse, he got behind it, and a little more than two months later we had our first event, with 75 riders.
Last year, we had close to 250 participants and made more than $22,000. It grows every year because if you come one year, you keep coming back. We work hard on the details that make it a welcoming, safe and fun event, and creating an atmosphere conducive to socializing. We send out a survey and act on the feedback, because we want it to be a great experience.
West Brunswick High School cheerleaders will be all along the route, right up to the red-carpet finish, and everyone gets a T-shirt, a hot lunch and a finishing medal. Along the way there is gorgeous scenery, including at the rest stops that are supported by our wonderful sponsors, whom we diligently promote.
The cycling community in general is inclusive and caring. This year, for the first time, we’ll have a 30-minute kids event, complete with medals and lots of fun.
Since the beginning we’ve dedicated a portion of the tour to fallen Master Trooper Kevin Conner, who dedicated his life to serving others. NFL Hall of Famer DeAngelo Williams is a member of a Charlotte cycling club, and he rides with us every year. And everyone enjoys getting their photo taken with their name on the big board when they sign in. It’s all about camaraderie, learning about and supporting the good works of Rotary — and of course enjoying the stunning vistas of our South Brunswick Islands.”
