Employee Spotlight: Cindy Caron

Cindy and her son Tyler and daughter Tess at Duke Gardens

What are some favorite off-work activities?

Well, we’re always busy. Our daughter is on the swim team at West Brunswick High, so we travel to meets. They’ve made it to the state championships a few times and won, which is fun. Our son is a solar developer in Durham, and we love to go to Duke Gardens when we visit him. We just got back from the Atalaya Arts Festival in Huntington Beach State Park not too long ago. Whenever I travel, I like to go to art galleries and museums, and old libraries and bookstores too. I also collect pottery, and have found some wonderful pieces while thrifting. It would be great to own an art gallery one day, so interesting to get to know the artists and their stories, and share that with customers. I also want to learn how to throw pottery, something I recently verbalized to my husband, and I’m going to make it happen.

You officiated at two weddings?

Yes, my brother’s, and later one of my closest friend’s! I grew up in Boston, and in Massachusetts you can apply for a one day permit to officiate. I actually incorporated some of the vows that I wrote for my wedding into my brother and sister-in-law’s ceremony. My mother is from South Korea, so we had relatives travel from there to attend, it was quite the occasion. When I presented the newly married couple to the guests, it was a moment I’ll never forget.

Have you visited South Korea?

When I was in high school my mother and I went to South Korea for a month during the summer, and I got to know her side of the family and see where she grew up. It was a fantastic and eye opening experience. I’m from a large city, but Seoul was unlike anything I could have imagined, it was so big and so modern. And the way my family there lived was different; very minimalist, and with each other constantly with little privacy.
