It’s the 50th anniversary of the Aurora Fossil Museum and what better way to celebrate than to attend the venue’s annual festival on May 23 – 24.
The main attraction at the festival is always the outdoor dig site where you can search for ancient shark teeth, seashells, and fossils. Fresh piles will be delivered from the local phosphate mine for festival attendees. Sunscreen and protective sun shade gear are recommended. Keep the following dig rules in mind:
- Screen size maximum is 12 inches x 12 inches, max of 1/4-inch screen
- No large shovels/digging tools (handles have to be less than 36 inches); a garden trowel and/or small garden rake work best
Other activities include:
- The North Carolina Fossil Festival Parade includes regional fire and rescue units, floats, antique cars and representation of community and fraternal organizations.
- Live music on the North Carolina Fossil Festival stage.
- Over 100 vendors, including fossil, mineral, craft, business and community organizations.
- Dinosaur shows featuring life-size puppets and exhibits.
- A variety of local and regional food and beverage vendors.
- “Kid’s Zone” with inflatable slides, moon bounce and other activities.
- Displays and activities by science, natural history, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) organizations.
- Laser Light Show in the evening and foam and slime parties during the day.
- Silent auction featuring fossils and natural history items.
