Born from a commitment to power rural communities, electric cooperatives changed the landscape of America. Today, that same commitment reaches beyond North Carolina, connecting communities and even energizing lives internationally.
This spring, Union Power will join a team of 15 volunteers representing eight North Carolina electric cooperatives to build electric infrastructure in rural Guatemala. This project is part of the Brighter World Initiative, which will bring electricity to dozens of homes and additional buildings.
Union Power will send representatives to help bring power to the Guatemalan community for the first time. Volunteers will construct five miles of line to connect the village to the power grid, bringing electricity to more than 50 homes, a school, two churches, and the region’s only health clinic.
This opportunity is another way our co-op reaches beyond the communities we serve to help bring electric service to those in need. It reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting others and sharing our resources to make a positive difference.
Without access to electricity, residents cannot power basic household appliances or use electric tools that would make daily tasks easier. This project will power the lives of the villagers and open new opportunities for education, healthcare, and economic growth.
