It Takes a Team to Keep the Lights  On

This time of year is a pretty good stretch for sports fans. We’re coming off the college football championship, we’ve just watched another Super Bowl, and now we’re headed into March Madness. As an NC State and Dallas Cowboys fan, I’ve learned that hope comes easy and humility usually follows close behind. Even I had to laugh when Ethan Bird, sports anchor and part time weatherman from Mississippi, joked back in 2022 that the 10-day forecast was much like the Dallas Cowboys: “peaking in the 90’s.”

Every year starts with optimism. “This could be our year.” And for folks like me, most years end with, “Well, maybe next year.” If you pull for your team long enough, you learn that championships aren’t guaranteed; they’re earned–often by teams that aren’t flashy, but are disciplined, consistent and play well together.

That’s one of the things I love about March Madness. Every year, teams without the biggest names make deep runs. They don’t rely on one superstar. They succeed by playing good defense, taking care of the ball and trusting each other. No solo acts. Just a team executing the fundamentals well.

We saw a great example of that at your cooperative with Winter Storm Fern. Like many of you, we watched the forecast closely and prepared for a significant icing event. Our crews, dispatchers and support teams were ready to respond, but we were truly blessed by the reality that the storm was much less severe than predicted.

But preparation never goes to waste. The planning still matters, because taking care of our members means being ready, whether we need every bit of that response or not.

Keeping the lights on isn’t about one person or department. It takes line crews, dispatchers, engineers, right-of-way crews, communications, member services, accounting, IT, warehouse and a lot of folks most members never see. Everyone has a role to play, and every role matters. When it all works like it should, you don’t notice the passes being made behind the scenes. You just see the result when you flip the switch.

And just like in sports, the work that matters most isn’t flashy. It’s inspections, maintenance, replacing poles, clearing right-of-way, training and planning years in advance. It’s showing up every day and doing the small things right.

We’re not chasing highlight reels; we’re chasing consistency. Reliability doesn’t come from one big play. It comes from a team doing the right things every day. That’s how we run your cooperative. No shortcuts, just people focused on the fundamentals and taking care of our members.

And who knows, maybe this will finally be the year for NC State or the Cowboys. Either way, I’m proud to be part of a team that shows up ready to serve our members every day.

Cooperatively yours,
Dennis Mabe, CEO
