Amidst the asphalt, cars and stoplights on Highway 17 in Supply is a little oasis of color, congeniality, and weather-beaten wood. Drifting Treasures sells driftwood, including small crafting pieces by the bucketful for $5, larger pieces for $20, and huge, heavy stumps full of character for around $400. Sandy Jones tells us more.
“Jeff Gibson started the business eight years ago in Hickory, North Carolina, and eventually relocated it to Holden Beach where I met him three years ago. I’ve always loved driftwood and after visiting his shop, he and I became friends, and he asked me to work with him. When Jeff decided to harvest driftwood full time, I took over the business where it is now in Supply. Although I love harvesting, most of my time is managing the business and serving our customers.
We harvest our driftwood from lakes and rivers in North Carolina. High Rock Lake is a good source for lighter colored driftwood, and the New River and Lockwood Folly have brackish water, which leaves darker pieces accented with barnacles. It’s like a treasure hunt every time because we won’t know the full beauty of each piece until it’s back at the shop, pressure washed and ready for use or display.
“I like to think of Drifting Treasures as a fun spot to stop by and get some inspiration, and share a mutual love of nature.”
Driftwood is special for many reasons, including that it lasts a long time. Mother Nature has taken it through a full cycle, and beautiful images are uncovered as it’s tossed and tumbled in the water over time. People love to use it for crafting, landscaping, building beautiful furniture or just for display on tables or shelves. You’re taking something that Mother Nature has worked her magic on, and making something new and beautiful with it.
We have customers who create amazing miniature scenes on wooden sea palm pods and some who make crafts to sell at our local beach festivals. One has a DIY app that shows how to make home decor and crafts, with some incorporating driftwood. We do custom work including arbors for beach weddings, lamps and tables, and we love to donate driftwood to nonprofits for their fundraisers. We deliver locally for a $40 fee, and we’re happy to go to your home or business to make landscaping recommendations.
This is more of a hobby than a job for me. I worked in customer service for many years, and just enjoy people and helping them. I like to think of Drifting Treasures as a fun spot to stop by and get some inspiration, and share a mutual love of nature. You’ll be greeted by Cuddles, my nine year old rescue Yorkie, the best dog ever. We look forward to seeing you!”
