Four County EMC

Mojotone Success Story

The company’s growth has earned both statewide and national recognition in recent years. McWhorter was named North Carolina Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration in 2023, and Mojotone later received the SBA’s 2026 Exporter of the Year award for its continued global expansion and manufacturing success. These honors reflect not only the company’s innovation and craftsmanship, but also its lasting impact on the local economy.

Mojotone’s continued success was made possible through collaboration between Four County EMC, Pender County, Pender Progress Corporation, the Town of Burgaw and other community partners. Through strategic financing, facility development, and workforce partnerships, local leaders worked together to help the company remain and expand in Burgaw rather than relocate operations elsewhere.

Four County EMC’s Director of Economic and Community Development Jimmy Smith said “Mojotone is a shining star for business development and success in southeastern North Carolina and the State. We congratulate their continued success and stand ready to assist them as they continue to grow and expand.”

Mototone President Michael McWhorter said “This community is a big part of our story. We’re proud to call Burgaw home – and even prouder that what we make here is making its way onto stages and studios all over the world.”

Today, Mojotone stands as an example of how strong local partnerships and visionary leadership can create long-term economic growth in rural North Carolina while supporting quality jobs and continued investment in the community.
