One of the most meaningful aspects of being part of a member-owned electric cooperative is the opportunity to share in its success. At Pee Dee Electric, this principle is deeply rooted in our values and reflected in the way we operate.
I’m proud to announce that this year, our Board of Directors has authorized the return of over $1 million in capital credits to members who received service during 1998, 1999 and 2000 (for those served during 2000, they will receive half of the capital credits allocated to them this year and the other half next year).
This is more than just a refund—it’s a powerful example of the Cooperative Difference.
As a not-for-profit, member-owned cooperative, Pee Dee Electric doesn’t answer to shareholders. Instead, we belong to you, our members. Each year, after covering our operating expenses and planning for future needs, any remaining margins are allocated to individual members based on their energy use. These allocations, known as capital credits, represent your share of the cooperative’s earnings.
Rather than sitting unused, these funds are reinvested into the cooperative, strengthening our infrastructure, building new power lines, and keeping borrowing costs low. Then, when our financial position allows, the Board approves refunds of a portion of these credits. This cycle supports long-term stability while returning value to those who helped build it.
If you were a member during the eligible years, you’ll soon receive a check in the mail. If you joined us after 2000, your capital credits are accruing and will be returned in future cycles—your time is coming.
This effort embodies one of the Seven Cooperative Principles: Member Economic Participation. Your monthly electric bill does more than keep the lights on—it helps build a cooperative that works for you and with you.
To date, Pee Dee Electric has returned more than $21.7 million to current and former members. We’re proud of that legacy and committed to continuing it in the years ahead.
On behalf of our Board of Directors and entire team, thank you for your continued trust and partnership. Together, we power a brighter future for our communities and for each other.
