- Put your lights on Santa’s schedule. Use a smart plug or timer to turn your decorations on at night and off during the day. This not only creates a festive atmosphere, but also adds an extra layer of security when you’re away, giving the impression that someone is home.
- “Aux” heat is on the naughty list! Make sure your thermostat mode is set to heat and not on emergency heat. If you increase your thermostat’s set point, do so in two-degree increments or less.
- Recharge your Christmas spirit. Keep rechargeable batteries on hand for Santa’s new gadgets. They may cost more upfront, but can save you money in the long run.
- Unplug energy grinches! Eliminate phantom loads and unplug any appliances and electronics that don’t need to stay on while you’re away.
- Don’t let the holiday heat escape! Make sure your chimney damper is closed when the fireplace isn’t being used.
- Keep Jack Frost outside. Check around doors and windows for drafts. If you feel a cold breeze, apply weatherstripping and caulk to keep your home cozy.
We hope that by applying these energy-efficiency tips into practice, you’ll make your home cozier and more efficient throughout the holiday season.
