Stay Safe on the Trail

1 Navigation
Getting lost can quickly turn an adventure into a misadventure if you lose your sense of direction. Always carry a map and compass (and GPS device, if possible), and know how to use them.

2 Hydration
Dehydration can be a real threat. Bring more water than you think you’ll need and a way to treat wild water if necessary. Mark down where water sources are before you go exploring.

3 Sun protection
Don’t underestimate the power of the sun. Pack sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat to protect your skin and eyes.

4 Insulation
Weather can change in a flash, so be prepared with extra layers like a jacket, hat, gloves and a rain shell or poncho to stay warm and dry.

5  Illumination
A reliable light source is a must for a dark night, especially if you find yourself with little to no moonlight. Headlamps, flashlights or lanterns will guide you through the dark, and don’t forget to bring extra batteries.

Visit nps.gov for other essential items, like a first aid kit and fire starters, to stay one step ahead of the preparation game.
