During the tour, the students learned about the Cooperative Business Model and United States history, visiting iconic landmarks such as the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and various Smithsonian museums. They also paid their respects at Arlington National Cemetery, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and the

Korean War Veterans Memorial. Delegates also met with Senator Ted Budd on Capitol Hill, where they discussed public policy issues, asked questions about government and leadership and received valuable advice on civic engagement and public service.

“The Youth Tour was an unforgettable experience. Visiting our nation’s capital and seeing the monuments, memorials and historic landmarks firsthand gave me a deeper appreciation for our country’s history and the people who helped shape it,” said Cooper.

“Traveling to Washington, D.C., with students from across the country was an amazing opportunity,” said Hyatt. “I learned so much about government, leadership and civic engagement. I’m thankful to Pee Dee Electric for providing an experience that has inspired me to become more involved in my community.”

As part of Pee Dee Electric’s commitment to community and powering a brighter future one member at a time, the cooperative sponsors one to two students each year to represent Pee Dee Electric on the Rural Electric Youth Tour. Rising high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, which opens each November.
