Where in Carolina
Country is This?

The July “Where Is This” photo by Carolina Country’s Renee Gannon features the “Tribute to Carolina Shag” mural on the corner of Lake Park Boulevard and Raleigh Avenue in Carolina Beach. The mural by Brian “JEKS” Lewis honors Malcolm “Chicken” Hicks, a member of the Shaggers Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in developing the dance synonymous with the coasts of North and South Carolina since the 1940s. The mural also features the old Ocean Plaza, a famous Carolina Beach dance pavilion during the Shag’s heyday. The “Swing Dance of the South” found a home along the Carolina Beach Boardwalk.

The mural is part of the Carolina Beach Mural Trail (carolinabeachmurals.org). The winning entry chosen at random from all correct submissions came from Tony Phillips of Sanford, a Central Electric member.
