The October “Where Is This” photo by Carolina Country’s Renee Gannon features the brick ruins of the St. Philip’s Anglican Church at the Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site in Winnabow. Completed in 1768, the church welcomed parishioners until 1776, when it, and the town, were burned to the ground by the British. Founded in 1726, this town overlooking the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County served as a major port city, acting as the de facto capital for the North Carolina colony where two royal governors resided. However, the growth of nearby Wilmington lessened the town’s importance. In the spring of 1776, British redcoats officially ended its existence. Today visitors can walk through the church and the excavated foundations of homes and stores. The winning entry chosen at random from all correct submissions came from Brian Burtram of Southport a Brunswick Electric member.
