The September “Where Is This” photo by Carolina Country’s Renee Gannon features the Loretta Mary Aiken, a.k.a. “Moms Mabley,” mural on the corner of Main and Caldwell Streets in downtown Brevard. She was born in 1894 less than a mile away from the mural’s site. Moms Mobley was a once called the “funniest woman in the world,” and known as a pioneering Black comedian and civil rights activist from the 1920s through the early 1970s. She used humor on stage and screen to confront racism, sexism and inequality. Several readers noted she was the first woman comedian to perform at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.
The winning entry chosen at random from all correct submissions came from Mary Lou Hickock of Sapphire a Haywood EMC member.
