Oriental is gearing up for the 16th Annual Chili Cookoff to benefit The Old Theater, a cornerstone of village life since 1945. Eastern North Carolina eagerly anticipates this event each year where a dozen local chefs compete for Grand Chili Champ. From 11:00 to 1:00, about 450 people will visit each chef’s table to sample their favorite chili. Three judges will choose their first, second, and third place winners while the people will choose their favorite chef’s chili to receive the People’s Choice Award and the Spirit Award. It cost $10 at the event to participate and receive a ballot.
