Exploring History and Culture at the Rankin Museum

The Rankin Museum, named after its founding collector, Dr. Pressley R. Rankin, Jr., M.D., has showcased an impressive collection of artifacts and exhibits that bring history and culture to life since 1987.

In July, Pee Dee Electric granted the museum a Care to Share Grant, made possible by Pee Dee Electric members rounding up their electric bill to the nearest dollar each month. The grant will be used to purchase an overhead projector, furniture, and other necessary items for future events.

Rankin Museum Board President Brett Webb couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the opportunities ahead: “We are excited about the future at Rankin Museum. With new events and projects, we hope to bring new faces to Ellerbe to showcase our museum and our town.”

As a nonprofit, the Rankin Museum revolves around preserving and celebrating theregion’s natural and cultural heritage, with a particular focus on geological, paleontological and Native American history. The museum’s exhibit on the heritage of Native American tribes provides valuable insights into the lives and traditions of the indigenous people who once called this land home, and features intricate pottery and related artifacts.

Another popular attraction for the Rankin Museum is their exhibit on the professional wrestler and Ellerbe native, André Roussimoff, also known as “André the Giant.”

“With artifacts and exhibits from around the world, we have something for everyone. I encourage anyone who hasn’t taken the time to visit to stop by and see for themselves,” stated Webb.
