From June 16–21, Harris and Keeter joined hundreds of young leaders from across the nation for this week-long adventure that immersed them in the history and workings of our nation’s capital. This annual event, organized by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), aims to inspire and educate future leaders by providing a hands-on learning experience in civic engagement and the cooperative business model.
“The Youth Tour was a remarkable experience. It gave me a deeper understanding of our government and the importance of community involvement.”
During their stay, Harris and Keeter visited iconic landmarks, including the Capitol Building and the Smithsonian museums. They had the opportunity to engage directly with members of Congress and their staff and discuss key issues impacting rural communities.
“The Youth Tour was a remarkable experience,” said Harris. “It gave me a deeper understanding of our government and the importance of community involvement. Meeting other students who share my interests and values was incredibly inspiring.”
Keeter echoed these sentiments, adding, “I learned so much about the legislative process and how cooperatives work. This trip has motivated me to get more involved in my community and consider a future in public service.”
Halifax EMC has a long-standing tradition of sponsoring local students for the Youth Tour. The program not only provides an educational experience but also empowers students to become active, informed citizens. Harris and Keeter were selected based on their academic achievements, community involvement, and leadership potential.
Upon returning home, Harris and Keeter plan to share their experiences with their peers and apply the knowledge they gained to local initiatives. Both students expressed gratitude to Halifax EMC for making this opportunity possible and for investing in the next generation of leaders.
