Help Keep Power Reliable This Summer—Enroll in Beat the Peak

Why Peak Demand Matters

When the weather gets especially hot—typically between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.—air conditioners run longer, appliances work harder, and electricity usage surges across our service territory. These periods of “peak demand” can put intense stress on the power grid, increasing the risk of service disruptions and driving up the cost of wholesale power.

To help manage the strain of peak demand and prevent more serious issues, Four County EMC participates in a statewide Emergency Load Reduction Plan. This practice is used only when absolutely necessary and is typically coordinated by our statewide organization, NC Electric Cooperatives,or by the regional power supplier, Duke Energy. These decisions are made to protect the reliability of the broader electric grid.

What Is Beat the Peak?

Beat the Peak is a free and voluntary demand response program that empowers you to be part of the solution. When high demand is expected, we’ll send you an alert—via text message—letting you know when to take simple, temporary steps that reduce your energy use.

These small actions, taken together by thousands of co-op members, make a big impact. They help reduce system stress, protect the grid, and lower the wholesale power costs that affect everyone’s electric bills.

Why Your Participation Matters

Every household that participates strengthens our collective ability to maintain reliable service. When members respond to Beat the Peak alerts, it helps Four County EMC:

And perhaps most importantly, it means you’re actively helping your community—by supporting the system we all depend on, especially during the hottest days of the year.

Are Rotating Outages Expected?

The good news: According to the 2025 Summer Reliability Assessment from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), our region is expected to have adequate energy supply under normal conditions. That means rotating outages are unlikely—but not impossible in extreme situations.

If emergency load reduction is needed, Four County EMC will provide advance notice through our website, social media, and your preferred communication method (text, email, or phone).
