Sometimes the topic for this article comes months in advance. This month, it came with thunder, lightning and long nights for our crews.
Fields were dry and lawns had turned brown. Farmers watched their crops with growing concern. Even our lakes reflected the drought, with water levels dropping well below normal. We desperately needed rain. This week, those prayers were answered. But as is often the case, the answer came with more than we expected.
Night after night, storms swept across our communities, bringing the rain we so badly needed, but it also brought broken poles, fallen trees and transmission outages that caused widespread power outages. While most of us were taking shelter, Randolph Electric’s employees were doing what they have always done: answering the call.
Most people see the flashing lights, the bucket trucks and the crews working through the night. Our crews see driving rain that seems to fall sideways, darkness broken only by a spotlight searching for the cause of an outage, soaked rain gear, long hours and the constant awareness that safety must never be compromised.
As we enter the heart of hurricane season, it’s easy to focus on the next storm. But this week’s weather reminded me that preparation isn’t seasonal. It is a year round commitment. The work that keeps the lights on during tomorrow’s storm began long before today’s forecast was ever issued.
But restoring power during a storm is only part of the story. The real work begins long before the first storm cloud appears. Every day, our employees inspect equipment, maintain right of ways, replace aging infrastructure, train for emergencies and continually look for ways to strengthen our electric system.
“Success is never owned, it’s rented, and rent is due every day.” Reliability is no different. It’s earned through preparation, thoughtful investment and employees committed to serving our members long before they’re ever needed.
Over the past few years, we’ve also invested in self-healing technology, system improvements and infrastructure upgrades that help reduce outages and restore power more quickly when severe weather strikes.
Those investments aren’t made for recognition; they’re made because reliable electric service doesn’t happen by accident.
I ran across a quote a few years ago that I sometimes use in our employee meetings. It is “success is never owned, it’s rented, and rent is due every day”. Reliability is no different. It’s earned through preparation, thoughtful investment and employees committed to serving our members long before they’re ever needed.
Storms have a way of revealing the value of preparation. The work our employees do every day isn’t always visible. But when severe weather arrives, those daily efforts become the difference between longer outage duration and faster restoration.
Preparedness is true in our work at Randolph Electric, but it’s also true in life. Strong teams, strong families, successful businesses, thriving farms and resilient communities aren’t built during life’s storms. They’re built in the ordinary days beforehand. Built through preparation, discipline and a commitment to doing the right things, even when no one is watching.
That’s the commitment we’ll continue to make to you. We’ll keep investing, planning and preparing. Not because we know exactly what tomorrow will bring, but because you count on us to be ready.
After all, the best work is almost always done before the storm.
Cooperatively yours,
Dennis Mabe, CEO

Storms, disasters and emergencies can lead to power outages. When the forecast threatens severe weather, make sure you have a plan in place to protect you and your loved ones in the case of an extended outage.
