New Bern, N.C., has a strong and distinguished African American heritage. In the 1700s, it became known as a popular town for both slaves and free blacks. By 1860 free blacks comprised nearly 13 percent of New Bern’s population (by far the greatest number of free blacks in any North Carolina city or town).

New Bern’s bustling port offered many opportunities. Thousands of slaves who freed themselves during the Civil War poured into New Bern. Free black craftsmen built many of the town’s handsome houses and buildings.
