Traditional incandescent bulbs work with almost any dimmer, but the newer, more efficient LED (light-emitting diode) and CFL (compact fluorescent) lighting perform differently depending on the dimmer you install. You should use a dimmer designed specifically for dimmable LED and CFL bulbs. They are becoming more common, and newer bulbs are becoming more compatible with dimmer switches.
