This Halloween, the scariest thing in your inbox might not be a ghost, but a scam. As scammers continue to evolve their tactics, their schemes are becoming more convincing and harder to spot. The good news? Protecting yourself doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple precautions and the right tools, you can outsmart cyber ghosts and goblins and keep your personal information safe.
- Stop and verify urgent requests. Scammers often try to impersonate utilities, banks, government agencies, and employers. If someone calls, texts, or emails asking for money, account information, or requesting immediate action, don’t share any information. Verify the request with the organization’s contact information separately.
- Be cautious about what you share online. Birthdays, vacation plans, information about your child(ren), and workplace details make it easy for scammers to impersonate you. That information can make social-engineering attacks more convincing.
- Create strong passwords. Passwords must be at least 16 characters long and unique, with a mix of random numbers, letters, and symbols. Consider downloading a password manager, as it is a secure way to keep all of your password information safe.
- Secure your home Wi-Fi and smart devices. Change default passwords on routers, cameras, doorbells, thermostats, etc. For additional security, place smart home devices on a guest Wi-Fi network, if possible.
- Enable multifactor authentication (MFA). MFA requires more than just a password; it can be a one-time code, biometrics, or a physical security key. Never share MFA codes with anyone.
- Update your software. Keep your devices and apps up to date with the latest security updates to help protect your information.
So, don’t let scammers give you a scare. Stay alert and think before you click or share any information. A little extra precaution can help keep you safe.
