May is Electrical Safety Month, so it is the perfect time to take a closer look at the everyday habits that help keep your home and family safe.
Safety is not just a focus at Lumbee River EMC, it is part of who we are. As Director of Corporate Safety at the co-op, I often say that preventing electrical hazards starts with the small choices we make each day.
One of the most common risks we see in homes is the improper use of power strips. They are convenient, but when used the wrong way, they can quickly become a fire hazard. A quick check around your home can go a long way in keeping your family protected.
- Never plug one power strip into another
- Use power strips only for low-energy devices like TVs, computers and chargers
- Plug large appliances such as space heaters and refrigerators directly into wall outlets
- Choose surge protectors that are properly rated for your devices
- Keep power strips in open, well-ventilated areas and avoid covering them with rugs or furniture
- Install tamper-resistant outlet covers in areas where children play
Small actions can make a big difference. By taking a few simple steps today, you can help prevent potential hazards and keep your home safe while we continue powering our communities with care.

Lumbee River EMC puts a lot of energy into educating the public about electricity. We regularly offer safety demonstrations to students and other groups throughout our service area to teach important safety lessons to the participants.
