With more than 35 years of experience, System Inspector Randy Anderson plays a vital role in keeping Four County EMC’s electric system safe and reliable.

As part of his work, Randy carefully inspects the health of wooden poles and the infrastructure that carries power across our transmission and distribution lines. Every day, Randy identifies potential issues before they become problems to ensure the Cooperative’s system remains strong and our members continue to receive the reliable service they depend on.

How did you get your start in the electric utility industry?

I started out working for a contractor, Southern Builders, for about five years. One day I ran into a lineman at Brown’s Minute Market who told me Four County was hiring. I went out to help on a storm, and Dexter Swicegood, the operations supervisor at the time, watched me climb and work. A few months later, in July 1990, I was hired on. That’s how I got my start.

What kinds of work experience have you had at Four County?

I was hired as a second-class lineman and later became a first-class lineman. I worked on underground construction in Burgaw and Rose Hill, became a foreman, and then spent 27-plus years as a serviceman, the one who answers outage calls day or night. In 2017, I moved into my current role as System Inspector. Now I inspect both distribution and transmission lines, looking for damage, dead trees, or equipment that needs replacing.

What is your favorite part of the job?

Being outdoors. I’ve always been comfortable working outside in every season, and I would never be happy sitting behind a desk. I like knowing my work makes a difference, and I have a good supervisor who trusts me to get the job done.

What is your number one safety tip for members?

Stay away from downed lines, especially after storms. Do not try to move them, do not drive over them, and do not assume they are safe. Always call us and someone will be there to take care of it.
