Engaging Students with Real-World Connections

Bright ideas often begin with a simple spark in the classroom. Union Power is proud to support local educators who build that spark into an innovative learning opportunity for their students.

For one local teacher at Poplin Elementary, that simple spark became a reality. Brooke Siegel transformed her project, Under the Sea: A STEAM Exploration, into an interactive journey for her students to explore ocean life.

“What began as a small idea that was inspired by my son, an avid fisherman, grew quickly into a full instructional unit that was designed to teach students about marine life through hands-on learning,” Siegel said.

After Siegel implemented the project, she realized additional funding was needed. She applied for a Bright Ideas Education Grant and was later thrilled to hear she won. “Thanks to the generous support of Union Power, I was able to provide my students with engaging materials that sparked curiosity and meaningful experiences about the ocean and marine life,” says Siegel.
