Store shelves fill with new candles, sweaters, mugs, blankets and décor — all promising to make life feel a little cozier, which may encourage us to shop. While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying seasonal finds, you don’t need to reinvent your home or wardrobe to embrace autumn. Instead, focus on experiencing the season.
Shop your own home
Before heading to the store, rediscover what you already have. Bring out forgotten decorations, rearrange blankets and pillows or display candles and baskets in new places. Even fallen leaves or branches can bring a touch of autumn indoors.
Give your closet a fall refresh
Experiment with new combinations before buying new clothes. Layer summer dresses with cardigans, pair T-shirts with jackets and bring favorite scarves, boots and sweaters back into rotation. Sometimes an old wardrobe feels surprisingly new after a season away.
Taste the season
Let food create that cozy fall feeling. Bake an apple crisp, make homemade cider, try a comforting soup or invite friends over for chili. Seasonal flavors can become traditions rather than purchases.
Collect experiences, not things
Simple experiences like a scenic walk, collecting colorful leaves or curling up with a favorite autumn read can create the same seasonal excitement without the clutter. Also consider visiting a local festival, decorating pumpkins you can later compost and ending the night around a bonfire.
Buy what matters
Seasonal shopping doesn’t have to be off-limits. When something catches your eye, consider whether you’ll enjoy it for years, thrift when practical and choose one item you truly love over several impulse buys.
Fall is happening all around you. Enjoy the weather, sights, traditions and people that make it special — no shopping spree necessary.
