Reclaimed & Reused
Floor Tile Mosaic
Mary Savitsky, Emerald Isle, a member of Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative
This picture is a mosaic made from reclaimed floor tile (broken during the installation, thus the uneven left edge) and “trashed” glass obtained from Michael’s Craft Store framing department. I obtain the pieces of glass that are to be disposed of at the end of the day/week and paint them with acrylic paint. I then draw the design onto the tile and begin gluing.
Prior to starting the design, I drill two holes through the tile and insert framer’s wire to create a “hanger” on the back of the tile. Once the pieces of glass are dry, I grout the entire piece with polymer grout so it can hang outdoors.
I am committed to upcycling and find ways to use so many items that folks would otherwise toss out.
