This summer, Four County EMC was proud to send Joseph Keech IV and Maritza Mendoza, both students at Pender Early College, to the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Tour in Washington, D.C.
The pair earned the opportunity after standing out during Four County EMC’s Youth Leadership Power Up, an annual leadership program that prepares students to become tomorrow’s community leaders.
Joining more than 2,100 students from 44 states, Joseph and Maritza experienced a once-in-a-lifetime week exploring our nation’s capital, visiting historic landmarks, meeting with elected officials and learning how electric cooperatives serve communities across the country. Youth Tour gives students a firsthand look at American history, government and the cooperative difference while helping them develop leadership skills and lifelong friendships.
Four County EMC congratulates Joseph and Maritza on representing our cooperative and wishes them continued success as they put their leadership experience into action.
A proud tradition
This weeklong, all-expenses-paid tour is hosted by electric cooperatives across the nation, continuing a proud tradition that spans over 50 years. In 2026, students from more than 40 states participated, including a delegation of over 44 students representing North Carolina’s electric cooperatives. This exceptional opportunity offers students a firsthand look at a variety of career and volunteer pathways, regardless of their post-high school ambitions.
