Adjust the thermostat
Lower your thermostat a few degrees while you’re away, but don’t turn the heat off. Keeping the heat on protects your pipes during freezing temperatures.
Unplug what you don’t need
Some electronics can draw small amounts of electricity even when they are turned off. Before leaving, unplug items you won’t need, such as phone chargers, computers, gaming systems, and small kitchen appliances.
Check doors and windows
Make sure all doors and windows are closed tightly and locked. Check for gaps or cold air coming in and seal them with caulk or weatherstripping. This keeps warm air inside and helps your heating system work less.
Use timers for holiday and indoor lights
If you plan to be away for several days, use a timer or smart plug to turn decorative or indoor lights on and off at set times. This can help prevent lights from staying on longer than necessary while making your home appear occupied.
Before you head out, take one last look around your home. A few simple steps can help conserve energy, reduce unnecessary costs, and give you peace of mind while you’re away.
